Another
of my favourite haunts along the Gower coast, is Oxwich bay.
The Tudor mansion created by Sir Rice Mansel and his son Edward
stands on a headland above the wide sweep of Oxwich Bay. The house
is known as Oxwich Castle, and there indeed appears to have been an
earlier true stronghold on the site.
Philip Mansel is recorded as holding the site in 1459. However,
the remains we see today are best regarded as those of a
mock-fortified manor house, with clear evidence of sumptuous
accommodation, and raised during the peaceful and prosperous years
of the 16th century.
Gower in general, and Oxwich Bay in particular , is a great place
for relaxing. For the more adventurous - water sports such as
windsurfing and sailing are popular in the sheltered bay. Boat
trips, golf and pony trekking are all available locally.
Oxwich
Bay is another one of Gower's most popular beaches, with good
access, plenty of parking, shops and two and half miles of golden
sand backed by sand dunes, salt marshes and woodland. It is a safe
beach for swimming, but do not swim directly in front of the slipway
as this is the boat area. There is no Lifeguard patrol on this
beach.
