Apothecary is a historical name for a medical practitioner who
formulates and dispenses potions and powders to physicians, surgeons
and patients, Today we have the pharmacist.
The sign used by the Apothecary was the
Mortar & Pestle.
In England, the apothecaries had their own livery company, the
"Worshipful Society of Apothecaries" which was founded in 1617.
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was the first woman to get a
qualification in Britain when she passed the Society's examination
in 1865.
A mortar and pestle, is a pair of tools used in conjunction with
each other to grind and mix substances. You're in control of the
grind with a mortar and pestle set. It is your manual food
processor, able to grind just about any type of food that will fit
in the bottom of the mortar. And because of the minimal friction,
aromas don't burn off in the grinding, like they do with a food
processor or electric grinder.
