Attacking and Defending a Castle, Under Siege A good way to take over a castle was to place it under siege. The attackers army would surround the castle with men and large weapons like the catapult so that nobody could leave the castle. These sieges could last for many months, and the castle folk would soon run out of food and would be starving. When possible, the old weak, children and sick would be sent out of the castle, leaving the strong behind to fight the attackers, and supplies would last much longer. Sieges also ended from treachery amongst the defending castle garrison. Attacking commanders tried to exploit truces, and use the opportunity to plant a spy within the castle walls.
