Attacking and Defending a Castle, The Portcullis
The Portcullis was a heavy grilled door that was suspended from the Barbican or gatehouse ceiling, and designed to be lowered when the castle was under attack. Sometimes the castle would have two portcullis, the outer one being lowered last. This would create the opportunity for the castle defenders to trap some of the attackers between the two portcullis. Portcullises fortified the entrances to many medieval castles, acting as a last line of defence during time of attack or siege.
