Attacking and Defending a Castle, The Gatehouse

A gatehouse is a fortified building, built over the gateway to a castle. The modern gatehouse is a feature of European castles, manor houses and mansions.

Gatehouses were built with many different materials, wood was used at first, but later many other building materials were employed. Metals were used a lot and this made gatehouses very strong against spears and arrows.

Larger castles had up to two or three gatehouses in order to provide a much greater defence, If one fell, the castle still had one or two remaining.

The were a good place to set up a trap too, there would be small holes in the walls, where "pike" men would kill the invaders.

The gatehouse was another castle defence
