Castles were built near a water supply such as a river, stream. A dam was built to control the water supply into the moat, moats could be filled with wooden stakes or water, and very deep. The Castle Drawbridge was a heavy, wooden bridge which spanned the castle
moat. The drawbridge mostly made of a wooden platform with one hinged side fixed
