Attacking and Defending a Castle, Oil, Water, Stones When the trebuchet and smaller catapult was developed, most castles were completely redesigned in order to be once again protective because the trebuchet was a completely devastating weapon. The same held true for other common siege weapons which were often improved such as the catapult itself which often threw enormous projectiles which also consisted of human beings to spread disease. Machicolations were floor openings that were left open between the supporting corbel (a piece of stone that juts out from a wall to provide additional support) and the other wall. These openings allowed defenders to drop hot oil and other dangerous objects down on their enemy.
