Attacking and Defending a Castle, Fire

Mottle and Bailey castles were easy to attack, made entirely of wood, it didn't take much to start a fire up against one of the walls.

Usually Archers shot fire arrows into the palisade, which quickly set alight. As the fire spread through the castle those living inside would be forced to abandon the castle, and would be taken prisoner or killed as they ran out.

Soon these castles were replaced by stone for this reason.
