Attacking and Defending a Castle, Battering Ram

The battering ram was soon developed to knock holes, and destroy doors in castle walls. With the weight of several men behind the ram, it give a good clout.

The battling ram was mostly just a large heavy log, the castle walls made of brick or stone were weak in tension and soon cracked when impacted.

Soon a small hole would developed, then it became easier still, large holes were soon made with these rams in no time at all.

In a more sophisticated design, a battering ram was slung from a support frame with wheeled, and hang by ropes or chains so that it could be much more massive and also more easily swung against its target.
