Flying the flag at half mast

Flying flags at half mast is a sign of mourning, when they raise or lower a flag at half mast it must always be raised or lowered by going to full mast first.

Half mast is usually defined as one flag width from the top of the flagstaff, but this may need to be adjusted for the height of the flagstaff and the size of the flag to be flown.

Sundays are a celebration of the Resurrection, and so it may be felt more appropriate to celebrate that by flying flags at full mast on Sundays, rather than the mourning of half-mast.

The following regulations are circulated by Her Majesty’s Command to the Government Offices concerned. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport will inform you of any other occasions where Her Majesty has given a special command.

How the Union flag should be flown, The broader diagonal white stripe should be at the top left hand side of the flag nearest the flagpole, the Schedule applies to Provincial as well as to London buildings. A Government building for the purposes of flag flying is a building that is owned by the Crown.
