Ambrose
was descended from an ancient Roman family, which, at an early
period had embraced Christianity, and numbered among its scions both
Christian martyrs and high officials of State. At the time of his
birth his father, likewise named Ambrosius, was Prefect of Gallia,
and as such ruled the present territories of France, Britain, and
Spain, together with Tingitana in Africa.
St. Ambrose was born about the year 339 at Augusta Treverorum-the
modern Trier. His father Aurelius Ambrosius, belonged to the
senatorial aristocracy. He was educated at Rome and entered the
imperial service about 365.
When Ambrose fell sick he foretold his death, but said he should
live until Easter.
On the day of his death he laid with his hands extended in the
form of a cross for several hours, in constant prayer.
The last thing he said was, "Arise! Make haste! He is going" and
soon after he died.
It was Good Friday, April 4, 397, and he was 57 years old. He was
buried on Easter Day
