Medieval Barber

Avebury, Barber-Surgeon stoneThe Barber is a name for a person who who not only cut hair and gave shaves, but also practiced surgery and pulled teeth. Barbour, Barber and other spellings were used.

Stone Henge, The body of a medieval barber was found, trapped under one of the stones, now called "The Barber Stone". This barber was perhaps hired by the villagers to somehow let the stones, minister to them, remove some of their power so that they would lie more safely in the ground.

Did you know?, In one place it was forbidden to see pigs fattened by a barber-surgeon lest the pig had been fattened on rich peoples' blood.

The tools of the trade included razors, hand operated drills, bone saws, forceps and extractors for removing teeth. Since bouts of the plague seriously reduced the numbers of practising surgeons, the Guild of Surgeons in England joined forces with the Barbers in order to create a more powerful group, authorised by Henry VIII - The Great Company of Barbers and Surgeons.

The barber's pole, can still be seen outside traditional barber shops today. It is a long staff with red and white stripes spiralling from top to bottom, and there is a ball on its end. Its origin stems from the days of the barber-surgeon when it was used to advertise the practice of blood letting.
