Hedge Rows, Wrens

Wrens are familiar birds with rich brown finely barred plumage, a tiny fat body and a spiky tail which is always held cocked up. Breeds and winters in gardens, woodland, parks, waste ground and hedgerows.

The wren is the smallest British bird, which is why it appeared in 1937 on the reverse of our smallest coin, the farthing.

The gold crest is even tinier but less visible, so the wren took the honour of backing kings and queens.

They eat insects and spiders and annoy nobody, although there was a sad tradition of hunting a symbolic wren on St Stevens Day (Boxing Day) in some parts of Ireland and the north of England.
