Hedge Rows

The hedge rows in Britain had been slowly disappearing, and along with them the insects, mammals and shrubs. The hedge rows were being replaced with wooden or wire fences, the use of chemicals on the fields which spread into the hedgerows.

Farmers are mostly to blame, even ploughing right up to the base of the hedgerow. Then there are the urban councils, replacing them with paths or allowing other development.

So what is a hedgerow ?

The hedgerow is made up with many types of shrubs and bushes, and act as a boundary on a road or field. They are also a habitat for many species, all of which find the hedgerows a great place for food, shelter and protection from predators. While many people think that hedgerows are mostly in the countryside, they can be seen along our motorways and dual carriageways, and also housing estates.

However there is good news, conservation efforts are taking place, Money available as incentives. There is also the hedgerow regulations of 1997 in place to protect rare species, or historical importance.

The British hedgerows is once more thriving, some of the things found in hedgerows are available via the links below
