Experts are warning that the traditional pastime of blackberry picking is a dying art, even though the current economic climate makes it the perfect time to plunder nature's bountiful store cupboard.

Wildlife watchers have spotted a sharp decline in blackberry picking as the urban sprawl takes over the countryside and this year's wet summer has so far produced a disappointing crop.

Most land owners don’t want strangers knocking every day asking permission to pick fruit. A general rule is to feel free to pick from the outside of hedgerows but if you want to enter fields or gardens then ask permission.
