Aberfan Disaster, Shale

Shale is a fine grained sedimentary rock whose original constituents were clays or muds. It is characterized by thin laminae breaking with an irregular curving fracture.

Non fissile rocks of similar composition but made of particles smaller than 1/16 mm are described as mudstones. Rocks with similar particle sizes but with less clay and therefore grittier are siltstones.

A slag heap is a pile built of accumulated tailings, which are by-products of mining. These waste materials are mostly composed of shale, as well as smaller quantities of carboniferous sandstone and various other residues.

Trams were daily going from the pit, about eight to twelve trams a day full of the waste being mined from the washery. An average tram full of waste would weigh about three tons.

It had been two hours earlier just after 9.15am when a group of workmen were sent to the top of the big tip that had loomed above Aberfan for so long. There had been some ominous signs that it was sinking more than usual.
