Medieval Diseases, Ergotism

Picture to the left is St. Anthony--Patron Saint of Ergotism Ergotism is a poisoning from a fungal infection of grain, especially rye.

It infects porridge and breads made from the grain. Ergot is best known for the two frequent extreme forms of the disease: convulsive and gangrenous. The reddening or blistering of the skin has earned it the occasional name of St. Anthony's Fire

Symptoms

Convulsive, degeneration of the nervous system causes anxiety, vertigo, hallucinations, and the sensation of being bitten or burned, stupor, convulsions.

Gangrenous, Constriction of the blood vessels causes reddening and blistering of skin, then blackening, with itching and burning, and finally necrosis.

Lingering symptoms, including mental impairment, among survivors.
