Dysentery is an illness involving severe
diarrhoea, It is caused by ingestion of food containing bacteria,
causing a disease in which inflammation of the intestines affect the
body significantly.
There are two major types
Shigellosis, which is caused by one
of several type of Shigella bacteria
Amoebic dysentery, which is caused
by the amoeba Entamoeba
Spread through
contamination of food and water by infected fecal matter.
Symptoms
Bacillary, After 1-6 days incubation, watery stools,
fever, cramps, dehydration. In advanced stages, bloody stools,
meningitis, conjunctivitis, and arthritis.
Amebic, Acute form:
watery, bloody stools, cramps, fever, weakness. Chronic form:
intermittent diarrhoea, mild abdominal discomfort.
