Tuberculosis a severe disease destroying the lungs.
Many people in Welsh
villages suffered greatly from this Welsh climate, but the aching of
limbs is the least of thire worries when there is a spread of
consumption amongst them.
The children are most at risk from this
disease and even the Welsh, who seem hardier than most, do suffer
from it.
The Welsh call it the Darfoddedigaeth.
It makes breathing hard
and some do cough great gouts of blood from the lungs.
The first recorded treatment for
pulmonary TB was developed in the early 19th century, when English
physician James Carson demonstrated that injecting air into the
pleural cavity could collapse a lung and permit it to heal.
At the time, the practice went nowhere.
