Renfrewshire (Renfrew, Paisley, Greenock, Johnstone, Port Glasgow, Barrhead,
Kilmalcolm)
East Renfrewshire includes the areas of
Barrhead, Busby, Clarkston, Eaglesham, Giffnock, Mearns, Neilston
and Thornliebank and came into being in the local government
reorganisation of April, 1996.
Before that the history goes back many centuries and there is
evidence of ancient hillforts at Dunwan, Duncarnock etc. The history
includes the patron saint Conval, the strong links between the
Stewart kings, the civil war of the Covenant and the hectic,
industrial era which centred on the Cart and Levern rivers.
Renfrewshire is bounded by the Firth of
Clyde to the north, by East Renfrewshire to the south, by Inverclyde
to the west, by North Ayrshire to the south-west, and by the City of
Glasgow to the east.
Renfrewshire was created in 1996 as part
of the Local Government reorganisation. Its area is the same as the
earlier Renfrew District Council (part of the pre-1996 Strathclyde
Region) which was itself created in 1975 from the old Renfrewshire
County.
