Ullapool (Ullapul or Ulapul in Gaelic)
is a small town in the county of Cromartyshire in the western
Scottish Highlands. Despite its small size, it is the largest
settlement for many miles around.
Ullapool was founded in 1788 as a herring port, on the east shore of
Loch Broom. The harbour is still the centre of the town, used as a
fishing port, yachting haven and ferry port with boats to Stornoway
in the Outer Hebrides.
The
town also boasts a small museum, an arts centre, a swimming pool and
plenty of pubs, and is a centre for walkers and other holidaymakers
in the area.
The photograph is part of the old
graveyard, where once Prince Charlie is said to have hidden in the
little Catholic Cell, the catholic cell was then used to store arms
and ammunition.
Nowadays it still stands in the
graveyard with graves now in the interior of the ruin.
