Cheshire (Chester, Stockport, Birkenhead, Wallasey, Runcorn,
Macclesfield, Crewe)
The County Historic Environment Record (CHER
- Formerly known as the Sites and Monuments Record) is the database
of all known archaeological sites and historic landscapes in
Cheshire. It includes sites dating from prehistory through to the
post-medieval period. The date range is currently being extended to
include industrial sites and military remains of the more recent
past.
The CHER contains information on buried sites, revealed through
excavation and survey or through aerial photography. It also
contains records of earthworks, listed buildings up to AD 1700 and
other standing structures, as well as historic parks and gardens,
battlefields and stray finds.
Details such as the type of site, its date, location, description
and sources are held on a computerised database and all sites are
marked on large-scale Ordnance Survey maps. Additional information
may include reports on surveys or excavations, correspondence,
plans, published and unpublished material and photographs (including
aerial photographs).
