Pentecost

The Holy Spirit descends upon the Blessed Virgin and the apostles fifty days after the Resurrection, imbuing them with divine gifts for their missionary service.

This episode in the Church’s history was the theme of the Hours of the Holy Spirit. Like the Hours of the Cross, this sequence of prayers was recited seven times a day , after the Hours of the Virgin.

In some pictures of the representations of Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit is shown in the form of a dove descending. In many Pentecost images the Apostles hold books. It also becomes traditional to show the Virgin Mary with the Apostles at Pentecost, sometimes at the centre of the composition.

Whitsun, Sunday occurs ten days after Ascension Day and seven weeks after Easter Sunday and is now referred to as Pentecost. After Sunday the next week was a time for public fairs and festivals, where Morris dancing and mystery plays were performed. Whitsun ale was often brewed, distributed and sold.
