Boxing day, for all the overseas visitors, no boxing day is not the
day all families get together for a fight (Or is it?)
Nor is it
a day we box everything up...
Boxing Day has traditionally been associated with the rich giving gifts to
the poor in boxes.
Boxing Day is celebrated on December 26 in Great Britain, Canada, Australia
and New Zealand. When December 26 falls on a weekend, the following Monday is
observed as the public holiday.
The origin of the name is not known for certain, but it may derive from the
opening of alms boxes that had been placed in churches over the holidays
for distribution to the poor.
My
guess is this... Since the servants had to work on Christmas day, they had to
wait until the next day before they could have a day off, and open their
presents?
I did also hear that "Piggy Banks" ? The poor did receive money in hollow
clay pots with a slit in the top. These had to be broken to get the money out.
These clay pots were nicknamed "piggies". As a result, we now have piggy banks
to keep money in. NO?
